About Me

& I'm a current 4th year mechanical engineering student going for a BS/MS in a focus in sustainability. My minors are environmental studies & military leadership and studies. In the future I want to commission as an officer in the United States Space Force as a developmental engineer. Later on after retirement I want to open my own law firm to practice patent & environmental law to take on environmental justice cases.
Purpose for creating the website
My main goal is for the class to be educated about where some of the raw resources for renewable energy may come from in the future. This is a hot debate in the UN because the mining would take place in international waters. This will impact the next generation and our children may suffer the consequences of today's current action. The process may be better in ocean operating versus land strip mining. Renewable technology requires raw materials that cause environmental damage to harvest. There is a complexity in mining operations such as policy, international relations, and technological limitations that oftentimes gets overlooked.
Conclusion
The hope is that as you explore this website you gain more insight on the seabed mining debate. There is not right or wrong answer when asked if we should allow seabed mining. This is up to you as an individual to take in the information and form your own opinion.
Personally, I believe seabed mining can be the push that gets countries to turn toward renewable energies. This would also relieve the land of strip mining. I however do believe that more research is needed before the industry should advance.

Connection to former environmental studies classes
Before taking my Environmental Studies Capstone I took Great Lakes taught by Dr.Whitney. It was very insightful, and explained the importance of the great lakes as a freshwater resource, but also the rich cultural history of the surrounding area. My project focuses on preserving marine ecosystems because while they offer incredible economic gain they must be studied and protected to serve the flora and fauna that rely on it. This is comparable to the logging industry and pulp factories that caused harmful runoff to travel into the Great Lakes and hard the ecosystem.
Many of my other STSO courses such as Nature and Quantification have discussed the fact that we look at the environment in economic terms. The importance of the environment measured by the government is often what the economic potential of the resources it has to offer. This particularly applies to my capstone project because companies and countries are pushing for operations to start before scientists are able to properly gauge the consequences of such actions. The environmental studies minor has developed an interest in law and policy for me, and has encouraged me to go to law school after for patent law. I was to specifically file patents for sustainable products to protect the environment.
